[10] A Life-Changing Product: My Whoop Experience

How many products truly change your life? And of those, how many continue to deliver year after year?

I joined WHOOP in 2019 on my brother Ken Libby‘s recommendation. At the time, we were still grappling with the loss of our sister Kristin, a tragedy that brought our health into sharper focus. It began as a low-risk fitness experiment. I never expected it to become a tool that would fundamentally reshape how I live.

Why Whoop?

At first glance, Whoop seems too simple. It has no screen, and much of what it tracks (heart rate, VO2 max, and blood oxygen) is also on my smartwatch. So what’s different?

It’s the insights. Whoop’s algorithms translate these raw inputs into clear, actionable guidance. It connects everyday choices, (what and when you eat, how you sleep and train) to your health and performance. It reveals what’s happening inside your body, often before you consciously feel it.

What I’ve Learned

Whoop has provided more actionable insights about my body than any doctor’s visit. Beyond tracking workouts, a few standouts:

  • Meal timing matters: When I eat affects my sleep quality and next-day performance
  • Alcohol’s toll is real: Seeing even on drink’s impact on recovery makes me think twice
  • Early sickness detection: It often flags illness before symptoms appear
  • Cold plunges and saunas work: Morning cold plunges lower my stress; evening saunas improve my sleep
  • Rest beats hustle: Relaxing an hour before bed leads to more than an hour of productivity gain the next day

An Enviable Business Model

Whoop is designed around the user, aligning its success with helping people meet their health goals. It’s a rare case where product addiction enhances well-being rather than undermines it. Their learning ecosystem works through an app, podcast, and support, encouraging continual experimentation.

I recently upgraded to Whoop MG, adding metrics like “Whoop Age” and “Pace of Aging” (yes, I have work to do). I’m eager for the upcoming blood test integration and to keep pushing the boundaries of health optimization.

The Broader Application

Personally, I want to show up as my best self for my wife and son, especially after long workdays. My fitness helps me do that. I want to honor Kristin’s memory through commitment to my health. We should all invest in products that serve our most personal goals.

Professionally, I research and develop novel product concepts in the life insurance industry. Whoop’s design and mission-driven model set a high bar for how to deliver long-term, personalized guidance. Their focus on health span, longevity, and insight-driven support mirrors where our industry is heading. Will Ahmed, we would love to explore a possible partnership.

Is Whoop for You?

If you’re vulnerable enough to explore how to improve upon your existing health habits, Whoop may be for you. If you’re willing to make changes, Whoop won’t just track your progress. It will help you create it.
